Brother DCP-8085dn Digital Copier and Laser Printer w/Full Duplex Capability and Networking

Brother 8000 series is a wonderful family of printers.5
Contrary to one of the erroneous reviews, the Brother 8085DN DOES support duplex scanning and copying. That is why you pay $50-75 more than the 8080DN, which only does duplex printing.

We have the 8080DN and this series of Brother printers is FANTASTIC — an amazingly powerful business printer for the price of a personal printer. These things are well built, meant for a busy workgroup/small business setting. My wife runs a small nonprofit and has to print board packets and this thing just cranks them out. It will happily print two-sided packets and collate them — it will go hours of printing without a hiccup. Duplex printing is much slower than one sided printing — DUH, that is true of ANY printer. You’re not going to get high duplex speed until you get into the corporate printers.

We have also owned the Canon ImageClass duplexing printer. The Canons are terrific, very trouble free personal printer. But there is a HUGE catch — their $65 toner cartridge will only go about 1,000 pages.

The biggest selling point for this printer — the Brother 8000 series can use a high yield cartridge (about $85, or less if you feel comfortable using a remanufacture) that is rated at a whopping 8000 pages!!!

We do a lot of printing, so I researched extensively, and Brother is in a class by itself for cartridge capacity and low print costs for this class of printer. I highly recommend anything in the 8000 series.

The only reason you might not want this printer for a home office is that it is BIG. But you can’t get performance like this in anything smaller that I know of.

Other good things:

1) Energy Star compliant. In sleep mode this printer only draws 18 watts to keep the drum warm. You’d be surprised how many printers eat 40 or 50 watts in standby mode, which will cost you $30 or $40 over a year’s time. Energy Star means first page speed is not quite as good as the little HPs, but it’s still only like 12 seconds.

2) This printer has TRUE networking capability — no need for print server. That means the only connection you need is ethernet from your router to the printer. Install drivers, and every computer on the network can control this printer completely — that means scanning as well. I can’t tell you how much better that is than having a USB printer that has to be shared. Brother seems to have high quality drivers — we’ve connected XP, Vista and Win 7 without a hitch.

To sum up, everything about this printer speaks of quality and durability. It is just incredible what you can get for $300-$350 these days.

Excellent product5
The printer quality is excellent. Print speeds exceeded my expectations. I purchased another one for my second office based on the performance of this printer. I will buy again.

All the features but none of the quality2
This printer/copier was simple to set up. Unpackaged, installed software, plugged in and it worked. Unit does duplex scanning and printing as advertised. It had all the features I needed for a relatively good price. Unfortunately, the moment I took it out of the box I knew I’d probably made a bad choice.

The build quality is very cheap and flimsy. Cheap plastic, poorly fitted parts. This translated into issues the first time I used it. The duplex scanner, which is something I’ll use regularly, pulled multiple pages at once nearly every time I ran a job. The second job, a page got jammed in the feeder. I didn’t get through a single job successfully.

Print speed is also pretty poor while duplexing. I’m obviously not looking for the same speed that the $10k printers we have at work. Double the time is what I’d expect unfortunately it’s more like three times longer to print a page. Non-duplex printing is as advertised. Duplex scanning is painfully slow.

In the end, I returned the unit and just received a Canon imageclass D1120. All the same features but the build quality is *substantially* better. And it’s $30 cheaper. So far, no jams, faster printing, better quality. I’ll keep the Canon for a few more weeks and review it at that time.

It works5
It screws into the tripod mount and lets you attach a strap. It’s well built. Enough said.

BYOS(ling) – great alternative to paying the $604
Great little piece of hardware if you have a spare laptop strap hanging around and want to make an over the shoulder strap for a DSLR. Works great with my D90 a very comfortable way to carry.

Cleopatra Description:

Stream Cleopatra Movie Online

Amazon.com essential video
This 1963 extravaganza, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, is certainly an epic historical drama with all the elements: elaborate sets, intricate costuming, name actors, a factual basis, and an overlong script (just over four hours). But the acting is well performed and the backdrops are lush, making this a film worth seeing. Elizabeth Taylor is Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen who seduces Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) in a political move to hold onto her empire. When Caesar is killed in the Roman Senate, Cleopatra looks to Marc Antony (Richard Burton) for his support, practically enslaving him with her wiles. Taylor is dramatic in her role, at times overly serious, but stunning nonetheless as the woman described as “well versed in the natural sciences and mathematics. She speaks seven languages proficiently. Were she not a woman one would consider her to be an intellectual.” While the film does seem to drag at moments, it deserves the four Oscars it won for cinematography, art direction-set direction, costumes, and special effects. Don’t confuse this Cleopatra with the 1934 version directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Claudette Colbert. –Jenny Brown

Customer Reviews:

a great Hemingway adaptation5
When Hemingway picked Cooper and Bergman for this 1943 film, he couldn’t have done better. They’re heavenly to look at, and the chemistry between them is palpable. The dialogue has retained the style of the book, and they make it so natural, which is not an easy feat. Set in 1937 Spain, this Civil War story is an action packed adventure, but above all, it’s a love story.

Terrific cinematography by Ray Rennahan, a good atmospheric score by Victor Young, and a slew of interesting character actors (Katina Paxinou won the Oscar for best supporting actress) back the magnificent leads.
Cooper is not only gorgeous, but gives a subtle, lovely performance, and Bergaman, looking younger than her 29 years with her short, curly hair, is luminous…I love the scene where she gets her first kiss, and says “I always wondered where the noses went”.

Directed by Sam Wood, who a year earlier had directed one of Cooper’s most famous films, “The Pride of the Yankees” (and in ‘45, was to team again with Cooper and Bergman in “Saratoga Trunk”), did a wonderful job with Hemingway’s novel…it stands up to many viewings, and is a must for Cooper and Bergman fans.

INGRID AND GARY FOREVER5
No doubt about it ! This DVD deserves a perfect 5 (this is the second that I give after ROBOCOP director’s cut). 130 minutes of absolute pleasure with actors who were real stars : Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper. The colors are wonderful, the scenery superb and the musical score terrific. But I hear someone out there complaining : Gosh ! It’s a 1943 movie, an antiquity. Don’t be afraid, you will not be disappointed. There are also in this movie explosions, gunfires and even torrid love scenes. Just observe how Ingrid Bergman plays with her hair in order to seduce Gary and you will forget all the actual little starlets. This story of a three-days love affair during the spain civil war is about idealism, self-sacrifice and hope. Themes that , I agree, are not specially “in” in 1998 but were developed by Ernest Hemingway, one of the best american writers. A healthy DVD in order to clean our eyes and ears.

A Highly Improved Version4
Hemingway’s acknowledged masterpiece about Spanish Civil War guerillas was censored both in print and in film. In print, the four letter words were cut and stilted pseudo-Spanish substituted. That defect of course remains in this pretty much faithful transmission of the text; it is what gives it a funny archaic sound most do not understand. Also, 2 key scenes were cut from the cinema release, to make the story less “brutal” and to emphasize the romance. These episodes were Pilar’s telling of the execution of the fascists in her village, and El Sordo’s final stand. Thankfully, this version restores both magnificent scenes, making a much tougher, grittier film that is worthy of Hemingway’s realism. One could only rate the prior version 3 stars, at best. This however is a first rate American film now being seen for the first time, 60 years later.

The plot is very simple. An American joins the anti-Franco guerillas in the mountains to help them blow a key bridge. The guerillas suspect him and have their own internal problems. The Yank falls in love with a girl who has been brutalized by the fascists. With pluck he sticks to his mission until the film stops.

The romance was tough going in the book, rather euphemistically treated. You could not deal with that realistically at the time, either; Hemingway’s story pushed the limits of its time. Cooper and Bergman made the coupling palatable for an American audience then, and reviews here still attest that it works now. Fine; I visualize it much more differently but am confident that EH’s idea still would not sell, albeit for different reasons. In any event the romance provides a plot engine to take one through part of a key historical event of the 20th century. Hemingway got over there as a partisan of the Communist opposition, but the novel was balanced enough to infuriate many prominent American reds in the media of his day.

People should read the book, of course. This film is however, a sincere adaptation and faithful to the spirit of its day. Ultimately, Cooper’s signature performance nails just the right tone for this presentation of what critics of the day called “grace under pressure.”

Versatile headphones for any activity

Really nice headphones for the price4
I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much for [the price] but Ihave been thoroughly pleased with these little babies ever since I received them. Since aural satisfaction varies widely by person, I will try and give you and idea of what I look for in the phones I buy. While not a fan of super exaggerated bass, I do err on the side of slightly emphasized low down sounds, especially for phones on the go for working out, etc.. Also, I’m not looking for super high fidelity when I’m doing sit ups and biking through downtown. These headphones are light and they sound really good at high or low volumes, even with a good amount of bass. I tested them out on my current headphone killer “Fight Club”. It has a lot of techno-low throb bass tracks that my Grado’s, my Sharp phones that came with my Minidisc player and my Sony CD250’s, start to cry about at high volumes. Try the end of track 3(“What Is Fight Club?”). Although no headphone(or speaker) has ever been able to handle that track without distortion, including these, at high volumes, these were the highest I’ve ever been able to crank that track. These phones also sounded good with classical(Vivaldi), vocals(Otis Redding) and pop(The Police)

Now for some not so good’s. These things are UGLY. I mean U-G-L-Y you ain’t got no alibi, ugly(i just had to sneak in a 2nd grade insult in there.) I like old school looks(just like my jokes), my Grado’s are pretty funky and I like em, but these things are a joke. The “sport” mode that wraps around the back of your heads looks pretty foolish too. My only hope is that folks won’t look to closely at the gym or when I’m zipping by on my bike. Also, while comfortable on your head(they have little foam rests that help cushion the force against your ears) they have a disturbing tendency to close really tightly around your neck(either pressing on the side or on your adam’s apple) if you are letting them rest there. Not a huge deal, since they fold up to fit in your pocket, but still..

All in all, I heartily recommend these. They give my Grado’s a run for the money(they cost 60) and kick out a good amount of bass without sounding murky. I was also surprised at how long I could listen to them without getting “tired” of the sound. Even with my Grado’s, possibly because they can be a bit bright, I get fatigued and need to rest my ears and brain for a bit. But these little guys keep on kicking out the sound. Buy them. You won’t regret it. Plus they have a life time warranty, so if you get beat up for looking so incredibly dorky, you can replace them(i’m not sure if Koss covers getting your butt kicked, but it would be worth a try)

Great headphones!5
I love these headphones; they’ve got superb sound (particularly the bass region–I didn’t know headphones were capable of this kind of bass!), they’re very portable, inexpensive, and the accessories & features it comes with are great. They’re also very comfortable (particularly because of the foam pads that secure the phones behind/above your ears), although I have a small head and I’ve heard that these phones don’t fit so well on bigger heads. I also like the way they look, and the lifetime warranty is a nice bonus.

Good For The Price4
Strait out of the packaging I hooked them up to my HDCD Denon player. Overall, they’ve got good highs and mids. The 6khz treble region could be a little more pleasantly recessed than it is, but the high-end never gets fatiguing at normal volumes – only when loud. I must say that the bass is a little exaggerated. It is noticeably overdone in the 30-80HZ region — the lowest you can pretty much hear with headphones. This never *seems* to muddle the mids, which is often a problem with bass-heavy phones. It doesn’t seem excessively boomy and there are oodles of low-end dynamics, which I did not expect. They remind me a lot of the Denon 950’s, but without the Denon’s tissy-fit highs. When I hooked them up to my Panasonic 361C portable, I was surprised even further. With Curve: Doppelganger, the bass didn’t seem even the slightest bit exaggerated. Unfortunately, when I moved over to extreme low-end intensive music like Massive Attack: Mezzanine, there was still a little too much bass, but slightly less than on the Denon. Econoline Crush: The Devil You Know kind of had too much bass, but most people would probably prefer it that way. Yet, on many CD’s bass is noticeably overdone. Spatially, the SportaPros have a nice open sound.

The SportaPros fold up and this is where the other caveat comes out. When using the headband behind your head, the little fold-up hook can start rubbing against my head, behind my right ear. This only happens when the band slides too far down, though. All Koss had to do was have the hook facing the opposite direction to avoid this. They’re still the most comfortable headphones-that-press-on-the-ear that I’ve ever tried, and I do love how they fold up; it returns them to a nice, taught shape. The Koss has a good, short length of cord for portable use that also has a mute button on it.

I’ll keep the SportaPros as a portable and bass-y alternative. If used with bass turned down a tad, they would be even better.

P.S. Single-entry wires are not superior. They allow out of phase cross-talk to enter the opposite ear through the shared ground wire, which is why audiophile headphones are almost always dual-entry. The classic Sony V6, for instance, has a cross-talk problem and is unsuitable for binaural applications because of this.

This is the “Wenger” Swiss Army brand, not Victorinox4
There are two different Swiss Army brands; Wenger, and Victorinox (though Victorinox recently bought Wenger, according to Wikipedia). The Wenger brand tends to cater more to the economy market, and I think it shows in this Eau De Toilette.

It’s a decent fragrance, but like another comment said, it doesn’t last very long. I’d also add that it’s not very distinctive. It reminds me somewhat of the old Brut cologne or an aftershave. Keep in mind that it’s an “Eau De Toilette”; it’s a little weaker than a “Parfume” — which isn’t bad, it just means you have to use a little more to get the same level of scent.

I’m not unhappy with it, but I don’t think I’d get it again now that I’ve tried it out. Maybe my expectations were too high for a knife manufacturer’s venture into fragrance. :)

Good stuff!!!5
My daughter bought this for my husband several years ago as a gift. He loves it! Everyone loves it! I have had nurses come out of pre-op to ask me what he’s wearing! It’s getting hard to find, great price!

Very Pleased!5

Customer Reviews:

Delightful horror porn environmental fable4
D’Amato’s best Caribbean film, with beautiful actresses, quite a witty script and a classic D’Amato mix of animal cruelty (a cock fight!), lesbianism, heart sacrifice and some political humour. Great framing and cinematography too. There’s always another D’Amato film to discover, and this one is up there with the best.

Only For The Hardest of Hardcore Joe D’Amato Fans2
I wanted to give this a 2 1/2 star rating but decided to round it down rather than up. First, don’t be fooled by the title. There ain’t no Cannibals. It is a VooDoo sect in the Dominican Republic. Yep, the same place from which came Erotic Nights of the Living Dead. This is typical Joe and there is plenty of nudity. If rated it would probably get an “R”. The editing was sloppy to say the least and it was grainy at times. This might be an OK rental for a one time viewing, but not to own.Unlike some of his other works, the sex is pretty bland and didn’t appear to be his main focus, which I find somewhat unusual, all things considered. Charlie S.

Papaya: Love Goddess of the Cannibals4
ok, Papaya, Love Goddess of the Cannibals (1978)
Directed by Joe D’Amato (Anthropophagus and Emanuelle in America).

Ever since I herd that this Joe D’Amato classic was coming out into DVD, I was so excited and couldn’t wait!! Released a last week on DVD by Severin (Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade). Now Fully Uncut and Uncensored

Me, like most people owned the VSOM version or the X-Rated Cult DVD – That I thought were uncut?

But, when I received my copy of the Joe D’Amato classic…. I was not very happy!!! The DVD cover design/packaging was great – But, c’mon…. the DVD had Not one single special feature besides a Damn trailer that I could go online if I wanted to watch it!!

Could Severin not get Stelvio Cipriani to do an interview? They at least have put the Damn soundtrack from the film as a Bonus Disc, especially since the movie cost almost $30.

Also, the picture quality of the movie doesn’t even look like is remastered! I checked out www.severin-films.com and for some odd reason Jess Franco’s Devil Hunter and Bloody Moon, that cost only $17.99 (WTF!!) are remastered and are in High Definition and also include MORE then a Damn trailer as a special feature…they both include rare Jess Franco interviews!! I don’t understand???

Well, I’ve wasted enough of my time talking about this Amazing Joe D’Amato classic. It is a Must have for any Italian,Horror,Joe D’Amato fan! I’d wait til the price goes down.

Across the Universe

Watch Across the Universe Right Now

THE MUSIC OF THE BEATLES AND THE VIETNAM WAR FORM THE BACKDROP FOR THE ROMANCE BETWEEN AN UPPER-CLASS AMERICAN GIRL AND A POOR LIVERPUDLIAN ARTIST.

Watch Across the Universe Right Now

Reviews:

Is There Anybody Going to Listen to my Story?5
There have been several movies that have tried to make the music of The Beatles a central focus of their reason d’existence. Some – like The Beatles’ own A Hard Day’s Night and Yellow Submarine – are perfect, some are not (the dismal “All This and World War Too”). Even the camp classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was so bad it was worth seeing because of the music. Heck, even the forgettable I Am Sam raked in a killer soundtrack thanks to John, Paul, George and Ringo.

But they’ve got nothing on “Across The Universe.” Taking the turmoil and tumult of the sixties and re-imagining it through the lyrics of Beatle’s songs, it is a trippy, hallucinogenic ride that is a visual and sonic feast. Jude (from Liverpool, naturally) comes to the US to find his American soldier dad (Robert Clohessy, a regular from Oz – The HBO prison drama) only to collide with rich kid renegade Max and then to fall for his sister, Lucy. Suddenly, they find themselves in NYC with a Janis Joplinish landlady, Sadie, and her Jimi Hendrixian boyfriend, Jojo.

The sixties then take their turn into the war, and the drama unfolds as Jude falls for Lucy (“I’ve Just Seen a Face”), Max finds himself drafted (“I Want You”) and Lucy falls under the spell of the anti-war movement leader. Each point is often brilliantly illustrated, and director Julie Taymor tosses subtlety out the window for several of the film’s best sequences. In particular, when Prudence sings “I Want To Hold Your Hand” as a lament for a love that can’t speak out loud, football players fly through the air and collide as she walks through them. When Max gets to his indoctrination and the exaggerated GI Joes march in “stomp dance” style to “I Want You,” it’s breathtaking. While the narrative occasionally falters, the visuals and set pieces never do.

Of course, there is the music. While there’s nothing earth-shattering here, all the actors acquit themselves just fine. The small handful of cameos are great, especially Joe Cocker singing “Come Together” as three different characters, and Bono playing the Ken Keasey Electric Kool-Aid guru Dr Robert on the magic bus, promoting his new book titled (heh heh) “I Am The Walrus.” (I could have done without Eddie Izzard’s “Being for The Benefit of Mr Kite,” even if the sequence is sufficiently madcap.) But this isn’t a sloppy kaleidoscope like the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 1978 Soundtrack was; other than the three men mentioned prior, there are no stars here. In particular, Sadie (Dana Fuchs) and Jojo (Martin Luther McCoy) give dynamite performances, and other than Evan Rachel Wood, the cast is relatively unknown.

I really can’t say enough about the pleasure I got from “Across The Universe, and it may be the first time you walk into a theater humming the songs. I was skeptical at first, because many of the reviews I’d read were not kind. But I have a feeling many of them were written by folks of a more tender age, lacking the comprehension of the times portrayed on screen. One of the most fun things about this movie was catching the goofy Beatles’ homages sprinkled in the film’s dialog (favorite, when Prudence sneaks into the Sadie’s communal apartment and someone asked where she comes from, Jude replies “she came in through the bathroom window”).

This is also a recommendable movie for one other reason. It isn’t. When I say ‘it isn’t,’ I mean, not a sequel, not a rip-off of a TV series (old or new), not a remake and some lowbrow teen sex-romp. There isn’t anything cloying or coy, and while the movie is certainly political, the politics you get from it will be what you read out on your own. “Across The Universe” is as relevant today as it was when when The Beatles sang “But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow.” Grab your popcorn, sit back, relax and float downstream.

Very well done!5
My husband and I LOVED this movie! It is very creative and artistically done; it really captures your imagination and draws you into its world. The soundtrack is amazing, also. The cover songs are so well done by the cast, and it all fits in with the movie perfectly! Great performances.

ICONIC MOMENTS IN HISTORY, WITH MUSIC5
The fabulous Across the Universe reminds me of a time in my life. In the story, Jude, a young dockworker, (portrayed by Jim Sturgess) leaves Liverpool to find his estranged father in America, but when he arrives, he is soon swept up in a wave of change that is reshaping the nation. And, of course, he finds love. Evan Rachel Wood portrays Lucy, a rich but sheltered American girl who joins the growing anti-war movement.

Watching the two of them as they explore this rapidly changing world, and even when they are caught up in a psychedelic universe in a world gone mad, I was captivated.

Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, these two are buffeted about as they attempt to redefine their universe.

Worth watching just for the music, if for nothing else, this movie is more than the romantic trials and tribulations, the political fervor, and even the music–it reflects an iconic moment in America’s history.

I would grant five stars to this flick.
